Flash: Sommelier

Aged to something less than perfection the scent wafting to his nostrils makes his nose twitch. It smells of fresh wet concrete, minerally; something he read somewhere but fitting.

“Boy!”

He slowly turns to the sound of the slurred word.

“Boy, I am ready to check out, get your ass over here.”

Leaning his mop against the wall he hurries to ring up the bottle of Mad Dog. He is the Sommelier of Skid Row.

Flash in the Pan: Wave of Emotion Promotion

Do you wonder what that big beautiful blue book is in my side bar? Come on, ask me; no really ask me.

Thanks, I am glad you asked.

That my friends is the compilation of all the Spring Flash in the Pan, all of the authors in one place including little ole moi. Pretty awesome, right? I can now say I am a published author, my scribbling’s have made it into a book with the incredible writings of other really wonderful authors, all of whom are truly funny and talented.

I am in awe.

I am shaking in my high heels.

arrow1

Some of these talented authors have blogs others submit directly for book publication. There are a total of 16 authors and 168 pieces of great Flash Fiction in the Spring edition. Personally, I loved this set of words, the emotional peaks and valleys of elation to brokenhearted. I had a wonderful time crafting the stories, my first foray into writing to prompts and containing my word counts. Anyone who reads my blog regularly knows I can be loquacious at times.

If you enjoyed the Flash Fiction on my blog for Spring, I hope you will think about buying the complete set and supporting all the great authors who contributed. Flash in the Pan, Wave of Emotion is available in Paperback, Kindle, EPub or PDF (I of course bought the Paperback who wouldn’t want to see their name in print).

Well that is my plug for the day. I am really excited about this, yes I really am. I am excited about RedmundPro Publishing, a unique approach to the publishing world and one I am thrilled to be part of and happy to promote. In the future expect to see more books and authors promoted from RedmundPro.

Flash: Reservations

Lines are long for a Sunday night; people fidget, children act out from boredom. Everyone watches as flights change from on-time to delayed or cancelled. Anger is palatable; in the Red Carpet line, a lone woman stands serene.

True approaches the desk, ahead of many waiting far longer than she, the agent politely greets her, “may I assist you with your reservations?”

“Thank you.”

Transaction complete, True saunters through security past lines. A riot ensues.

Flash: Diner

Tommy screams pancakes, with raspberry syrup. Jane wants waffles, with peanut butter.  Ice cold milk for both, orange juice, no pulp for either.

Orders in, where is George? Unshaven, breath smelling of last night’s beer he stumbles into the kitchen.

“Coffee”, he belches out.

“Is that all?”

“Eggs, over easy, bacon and toast.”

She stares around the table at her family then ties her apron on for another day of work at the diner.

Spring Flash Finale

Flash in the Pan is brought to you by the amazing Red of M3 fame. To finish off the Spring Flash I bring to you the last of the words I didn’t finish in the order or the timeliness I should have, my bad. My wonderful sister of heart pinged me this morning to beat me kindly about the head and shoulders, with gentle reminders that I promised to do all the words.

So, without further ado, here are my entrants to Spring Flash

I will slap him if he does that again.

She felt the pinch on her arm, then the needle slide into her vein the rush of warmth and then nothing.

“Honey, can you hear me?”

It was her mother’s voice, why can’t she see me?

I am here, right here!

Dammit, what is wrong? Why can’t they hear me?

“I am sorry Mrs. Fragile, there is nothing more we can do. You will have to decide.”

“Oh, Doctor I know she is in there. She wouldn’t want to live this way though turn them off.”

No, wait I’m Alive!”

The entire town was apathetic, not a single adult or child within the city limits could be bothered with even the simplest of tasks. The pall of winter, having lasted into the spring sucked joy from all. The lament could be heard, “Will the sun ever shine again?”

Happy day, Saturday what should Lister find on the stoop?

Come one! Come all! See the Circus in Farmer Fred’s Field of Wonder, just outside town!

Lister ran door to door and the neighbors were aroused from their winter languor. What better way to end the winter but with a circus.

Birds do it, bees do it, mom and dad did it at least often enough to have all fifteen of us; so why on earth don’t I do it?”

This is what Trinity Proof thought as she sat on the park bench watching couples and families settle on their blankets. She was paying particular attention to the couples making goo-goo eyes, kissing and rubbing each other in the most salacious way.

Was that legal?”

Trinity bit her lip, pondered the question some more, at twenty-five she had yet to be kissed or anything more.  Now, no one noticed her or spoke to her as she sat on her lonely park bench.

With the setting sun, Trinity was alone in the park in the deepening twilight.

“Time to come home now Trinity, you have seen,” a deep voice whispered.

Amazed and unafraid she held out her arms for the embrace.

FTP 11 Brokenhearted

Screeching tires warn of impending doom, the entire street freezes. A child wails, ear piercing, brokenhearted as angels weep. Mothers, uncertain run to their doors. Was this their child?

In the center of the road she stood, teddy in tatters.

No living person was harmed only her beloved teddy bear.

FTP 8 Satisfied

She rolls her tongue across the round end savoring the delicate flavor and texture. Every year it was the same, the anticipation, the rush. She thinks to herself, ‘Why, why is it only once a year I can be this satisfied?’

Nibbling the end slowly, she relishes each sensation, each flavor as it bursts across her tongue. Finally, her patience at an end she gently bites down and her mouth fills, sticky cream sending her into spasms of ecstasy. Her tongue whips out catching each thick globule, enjoying the sticky sweetness.

Damn Cadbury!

FTP 7 Contemplative

The cold of the floor seeped through her thin dress as she lay prostrate and contemplative before the altar on her last day of freedom. Tomorrow her family would watch as the sisters sheared  and covered her head with the white and blue veil. They would hear as she spoke her vows, marrying God and joining the cloistered Sisters of Mercy.

The bells thundered, it was time, she along with the aging Sisters she would be joining filed into the church where the priest waited to take her vows. She knelt before him, her head uncovered for the first time since she was fifteen, as Mother Superior gathered up her hair. Suddenly the young novitiate leapt to her feet, “NO, no I won’t, I can’t”.

She ran, out of the church and past her watching family, stopping only when she could no longer hear their angry calls.

FTP 6 Happiness

She saw them again today, their faces bright with joy. She watched as they ran from swing, to slide, to jungle-jim and back screaming their delight as their mother placidly looked on. She watched them as they played with others, running across green grass and sand boxes in equal paces.

They didn’t notice she was watching them. She watched from outside the circle of mothers and fathers who brought their children to the park. She was invisible to them, her children but hers no longer. Did they know they had a different mother once? Did they know, she had screamed damnation as they ripped them from her arms?

She scratched the scars on her arms, her nod just right as she watched their play from the edges. Yes, this is just right now. Her happiness complete, her home on this bench perfect where she can watch her not children grow.

FTP 5 Lonely

She lay on her side in the semi-dark room; barely breathing; right leg dangling off the edge of the bed as if she might make a break for it at any moment. The television a dull white noise, as if hummingbirds were endlessly whirling their wings.

Trapped beneath the heavy arm he wrapped around her, she clings to fifteen inches of the king sized bed she shares with her husband of decades. His breath whistles slightly, warming her neck; his body conforms to hers, as it has every night since the first. Tonight, just as every night she will be sleepless as he dreams; of what she wonders, not her.

Tomorrow he will hug her and smile as he leaves for work. She is lonely after all these years, possessiveness doesn’t equal love, she learned. Someday her right foot will hit the ground and she will run like the wind.
