Spring Flash-Tools

Shaking her head she wiped away a fresh tear. Ten years and five children in this speck on the map, not a friend or any relief on the horizon. They say, ‘if you are a hammer everything looks like a nail’, Joey certainly seemed to apply this philosophy but with a twist.

What happened to her dreams? Once upon a time, she had all the tools she needed and a plan then along came Joey with his smooth talk, dreamy eyes and his hammer. Now here she is, lost in the middle of nowhere with nothing, not even Joey.

Winter Flash – Final Four

Ruby red lips and a Mona Lisa smile, perfect.  Those eyes, dark and mysterious framed by arched brows, perfect.  Hair, windblown or laying gently across bare shoulders, always perfect.

He was fascinated with perfection, obsessed with the woman of his dreams.  His fantasy just beyond his grasp.  Disappointment a constant, his failure riding him like a harbinger of disaster each time he reached out to grasp his obsession and she slipped through fingers moist with anticipation.

He knew what to do, what was missing.  He knew and was prepared to make any sacrifice.

He laid out his tools on the counter, smiling to himself as he checked each with care; nothing was too good.  He stared at the picture taped to the mirror as he reached down, with one hand grabbed his pene and testes with the other made one cut severing it all.

Now, now he would be perfect.

“Where are you?”

“Right down the road, be there in minutes.”

July sat down to wait, ‘minutes, huh, been three days’.

Soon she heard the front door slam, “Honey, I’m home”.

She swung hard, cracked his head wide open that would teach him the difference between minutes and days.

She was without tits or ass.  She had a gap between her teeth.  Her eyes crossed and her hair that terrible color.

Why did they all flock to her like crazed flies on road kill?  Suzann fumed from her lonely barstool as Trudy flung her head back, laughing.

She turned the can facing toward her, label out.  She checks the shelves and begins turning the cans labels facing out.

“Shoppers the store will close in five minutes.”

She stared into her empty cart; her compulsive behavior had stopped her at the soup aisle. She sits down and quietly weeps.

Winter Flash-Demented

Jojo and Jimie visited every Sunday for Tea.  Miss Vivienne prepared for their visit with anticipation and precision.  Hair, make-up, dress all just so.  The Tea and finger sandwiches made just the way they liked them.

Vivienne was a stickler for the tradition of Sunday Tea with her sons.

“Miss Vivienne, it’s time for your bath now,” Carol said as she began pulling the chair away from the table.

“Oh, hello dear you just missed my boys they would have loved to see you.”

Carol removed Miss Vivienne’s hearing aids and gently placed her in the tub with the help of Betsy.

“What is wrong with her, I didn’t see any visitors.”

Carol glanced up at the new girl and smiled ruefully.  “Miss Vivienne has been with us a long time.  She is demented as can be, has been ever since she killed her husband and sons fifty years ago.”

Winter Flash-Mental

“Say my name.”

George stared at her dumbfounded by the demand.  Say her name; he thought that was what he had been doing all night.

“Say my name, dammit.”

“Honey.”

She stared from across the table, steam rising from the coffee mug mingling with smoke from her cigarette.  After a long minute without a single word, she stabbed her half-smoked cigarette out in the overflowing crystal ashtray, her hand shaking.  Rising from the table, she dumped her coffee into the filthy sink and made her way down the narrow hall leaving George staring after her, twenty minutes later she returned dressed.

She stood before him a lost sadness in her eyes, before picking up the heavy ashtray and with precision hitting him squarely across the bridge of the nose.  She watched as his nose flattened and his eyes swelled shut.

“Are you mental?”

“No, but my name is Rose.”

Winter Flash-Lunatic

We wandered the hallways, staring into individual rooms and periodically shuddering at the occupants.  The guides voice droned on without inflection describing the different causes for their incarceration; rebelliousness, uncleanliness, voices and worst of all promiscuity.  Now and then, there was a slight rise in his voice when he described the cures, especially for the promiscuous woman kept tied in darkened rooms.

Through the iron door and into the dayroom, the only room with windows the guide led us, the last part of the lunatic tour.  Here sat those who had taken the barbaric cures and were ready to be asked our questions.  The women in the room lifted their heads and stared, some with mild curiosity but most with blankness a dark countenance.

Some of us could not stop our gasps, others giggled at what we had seen.  Our schadenfreude unquenchable in the face of such pain.

Winter Flash – Delirious

Delicious ran newly calloused hands up legs encased in silk, praying she would get the seam straight without a snag.  Slipping on low-heels, she stared in the mirror turning checking her appearance, frowning.

‘I should be just coming in, not just waking’, she thought.

“Delicious, you ready honey?”

“Yes, I’m coming right now.”

“You look great, no one will ever know what you used to be, are you happy?”

“Delirious George, let’s get to church.”

Winter Flash-Irrational

True had a sense of being watched, an itch making her hair stand up as if with a life of its own. She refused to turn around instead, she continued her walk along the river, sauntering as if without a care in the world.  Around the next bend, she knew there was a bench where Jimmy Jon sat each morning to watch the riverboats, she would stop there and watch for who was following.

“Morning JJ.”

“Blessed Day, you got problems a following you.”

“How do you know, JJ?”

“Lookee there at that man, he doesn’t fit the riverwalk folk; not one bit at all.”

True looked where JJ nodded his head and saw the man, tailored suit, cropped hair and pale skin. Nothing about him stood out, but he didn’t fit in either.  She felt irrational in her fear of this stranger, until he smiled.

Winter Flash – Mad

Deanne stared at the white space and shuddered.

Dipping her roller in the first pan, she began the transformation.  Her family could hear her working, laughing aloud as she rolled out paint.  Later they heard something slapping the wall; they wondered what she was doing in the dining room.

Finally, the door opened.

“Are you mad, neon pink walls and lime green hand prints,” her husband shouted.

“Isn’t it perfect?”  Deanne smiled serenely back.

Hot: Finding the Path

finding the pathDid you notice? What?  Notice what you are asking, right?

Well, there is a new book added to the group to the right, casually scrolling by, flashing for your attention.  Flashing, get it?

Flash Fiction has switched from Fall (Autumn) to Winter 2013.  With this switch the latest book, ‘Finding the Path’ was released from Redmund Productions, just recently (a couple of weeks ago actually).  I love the cover; in fact, I think it is my favorite to date.  ‘Finding the Path’ is available in paperback, Kindle, e-pub and PDF, there is simply no reason not to grab your copy!

I had a great time writing to the Fall words; directionally challenged I had fun writing to all the directional words, often having to think about what they meant in everyday life and how to adapt them to stories.

The other authors in the book this time took many different directions (get it?) including excellent Sci-Fi.  I love this one; it is an excellent example of Micro Fiction from some truly creative authors.  Of course, it doesn’t hurt I made the cover!

I feel like I made the cover of Rolling Stone, I feel like a rock star!

Flash on over to Redmund Productions and grab a copy of your own.  Grab the entire series while you are there, I did and am giving them as gifts to family and friends who love to read.

Winter Flash – Level

“Are you stupid?”

“I don’t think so; no I am fairly certain I am not stupid.”

Jarrell stared across the fence at Ric, then at the fence itself. Slowly his face turned lobster red, “If you aren’t stupid you must be incompetent”.

“What are you talking about, I don’t see the problem”.

Jarrell pointed at the pickets, each a different height, “The fence is supposed to be level man, what were you thinking?”

“Creative interpretation.”
